LEADING BY EXAMPLE.
Mentors are the gears that make Ascend run. They deliver the retreat's programming by facilitating activities and discussions within their session groups. Each session group is composed of a group of Delegates with a pair of mentors.
We provide our mentors with training, and a manual that is filled with leadership tools, activities, and thought-provoking discussion topics which they can utilize in guiding their Delegates through the retreat's programming.
Mentors are responsible for facilitating meaningful discussions, encouraging bonding within and across their groups, and ensuring the safety of all Delegates.
Mentors are required to:
Attend the retreat in its entirety from May 6th - May 8th* (must be available may 9th as well)
Attend 4 mandatory full-day training sessions, the first being January 27th, February 24th, March 31st, and April 14th
Attend the on-site overnight training session on May 5th
Attend team-building socials leading up to the retreat
SafeTALK and Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) certification will be an asset.
Applications for the mentor position are due on January 2nd at 11:59 PM. All applications will be reviewed, and successful applicants will receive an invitation to attend our interviews which will be taking place on January 5th and 6th of 2019.
The investment to attend the retreat as a mentor is $180*, which is due after successful applications and interviews (no payment required at the time of application).
PLEASE NOTE: All residents of Ontario and students at Ontario post-secondary institutions, who are 18-27 years of age by the time of the retreat, can apply to become a Mentor.
*The Ascend Network is a not-for-profit student organization. The Delegate package covers three days and two nights of accommodations, transportation from York University to and from the retreat's location, food for the duration of the retreat, the canoeing fee, an Ascend 2019 Delegate t-shirt, the Ascend 2019 manual, and more.
